Colonel John Francis Hamtramck, the city’s namesake, wouldn’t recognize Hamtramck today. He, a Revolutionary War hero, took control of Detroit in 1796 after the British left. The Hamtramck Township, a sprawling area from Eight Mile Road to the Detroit River, was established in his honor two years later. It was a world away from the bustling, two-square-mile city we stand in now. Hamtramck is a city within a city, nestled completely inside Detroit. It’s a place where the echoes of the past intertwine with the vibrant pulse of the present. A place where Polish immigrants built a life, their language and traditions permeating every corner.

Hamtramck’s story took a dramatic turn in 1910. The Dodge brothers, John and Horace, chose this small village for their ambitious car factory. Dodge Main, as it became known, transformed Hamtramck. The population exploded, from a mere 3,500 to a staggering 48,000 in just ten years. Polish immigrants flocked to Hamtramck, drawn by the promise of work. They came from Poland, New York, and Pennsylvania, transforming this quiet village into a vibrant Polish hub. By 1930, over 80% of Hamtramck’s 56,000 residents were of Polish descent. Polish was spoken everywhere, on the streets, in shops, and even in city council meetings. The aroma of Polish bakeries filled the air. The spirit of Poland thrived here. Hamtramck became known for its Polish bakeries, shops, restaurants and churches.

But time marches on, and Hamtramck has evolved again. The Polish population has declined, drawn to the suburbs with their larger homes and sprawling lawns. Hamtramck, however, has not faded. It has embraced change, welcoming new waves of immigrants from Yemen, Bangladesh, Bosnia, and beyond. This tiny city, just two square miles, is now one of the most diverse in the United States. Walk down Jos. Campau Avenue, Hamtramck’s main street, and you’ll see this diversity reflected in the shops and restaurants. You’ll hear a symphony of languages. You’ll see the world in two square miles.

While the demographics have shifted, Hamtramck’s welcoming spirit remains. It’s a city of resilience, a place where cultures blend and traditions evolve.
