Upon this hallowed ground stands the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche a testament to faith resilience and art.

This magnificent church in Berlin-Kreuzberg boasts a history as rich and textured as its neo-Gothic architecture. Built between 1885 and 1888 it was the brainchild of architect Johannes Otzen. Julius Kleinau oversaw its construction. The church’s name Holy Cross Church refers to the biblical story and its proximity to Berlin’s Kreuzberg hill.

Imagine the scene on October 27 1888. Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife Auguste Viktoria attended the dedication ceremony. The Kaiserin even donated the altar. The original structure featured a soaring spire reaching 81 meters high. Sadly World War II air raids devastated the church.

Yet the spirit of Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche endured. Between 1951 and 1959 the church was painstakingly rebuilt. Though simplified the reconstruction preserved its essence. A significant renovation in 1995 transformed the space for both religious services and secular events. The architects behind this impressive feat included Uwe Evers Wolfgang Gschel Herbert Rebel and Joachim von Rosenberg.

The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche’s tower however is significantly shorter today than its original. It now measures 593 meters. The loss of its impressive height is a poignant reminder of the war’s impact.

Today the church is more than just a place of worship. It houses captivating modern art. Noteworthy is the Triptychon Christus im Holocaust a poignant work by Ismond Rosen completed in 1996. Two more sculptures by Rosen The Berlin Wall and The Guardians were presented to the congregation in 2022. These additions reflect both the church’s enduring commitment to faith and its engagement with the community’s complex past.

Even the organ at Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche has a fascinating story. Originally crafted in 1870-1871 by the Hook brothers for a church in Woburn USA it now graces this Berlin sanctuary. After being acquired and restored it was rededicated in 2001. Extensive renovations in 2021 added a trombone register thanks to community fundraising and support from Berlin’s heritage preservation agency.

The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche isn’t simply a historic building. It’s a vibrant center for community engagement. It hosts numerous events from concerts to lectures. It supports the needy including the homeless poor and refugees. A recent event was a Zukunftsdialog climate change discussion with notable guests including Hans Joachim Schellnhuber.

As you stand before Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche reflect on its enduring spirit. Its journey from wartime devastation to a hub for art community and faith is truly inspiring. Its history speaks to resilience hope and the enduring power of faith in the heart of Berlin.
