“Have you heard of Mashita Tenmangu?” I ask. Here stands a shrine with a story etched in time. This is Mashita Tenmangu in Osaka. It is more than just a shrine. It is a testament to history. It is a symbol of cultural evolution.
Mashita Tenmangu’s origins trace back to Minamoto no Mitsunaka. His descendant, Mataba Jiro Hisanaga, pioneered the Mashita area. He renamed it Mashita-mura. He enshrined Hachiman Daishin and called it Mashita-gu.
Later, Hisanaga’s descendant, Hisatsugu, found a sacred symbol of Tenmangu. This was during land reclamation after a flood. He enshrined it alongside Hachiman-gu.
In 1635, Odayama Yamato no Kami Nagamasa built the shrine pavilions. He moved Hachiman Daishin to a sub-shrine. He enshrined Tenmangu as the main deity.
The shrine became a village shrine in 1872. In 1911, it was designated for Shinpei Heihaku. Several local shrines merged with Mashita Tenmangu in 1912. These included Hachiman Shrine and Kasuga Shrine.
Mashita Tenmangu enshrines several deities. These include Sugawara Michizane and Amaterasu Omikami. Also enshrined are Amenokoyane no Mikoto and Nikihayahi no Mikoto. Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto and Amenokoyane no Mikoto are honored too.
The main shrine building shows unique architectural features. It has a bark roof. It features a one-bay Nagare-style structure. The front has a Chidori-hafu. The sides show attached 唐破風.
Interestingly, the stone pillars at the entrance bear the shrine’s emblem. This is a plum blossom design. It is a rare transparent carving adding to its allure.
Also, the shrine’s association with Sugawara Michizane is noteworthy. Michizane was born in the year of the Ox. The ox is considered the divine messenger of Tenjin. Hence the “nade-ushi” statue.
Considered divine messengers, these oxen are believed to bear away misfortune. Stroke the statue and pray for healing or academic success.
