In 1914, Lugou Bridge No. 1 Primary School opened its doors. It sits within Wanping City, a place echoing with history. Lugou Bridge No. 1 Primary School has witnessed a century of change. This school has a unique connection to the Lugou Bridge. Its students learn about the bridge’s significance from a young age. They even count the bridge’s stone lions, a task more challenging than it sounds. The number varies, sometimes over 490, sometimes over 500, due to weathering and damage. This teaches them a poignant lesson about the ravages of time and the importance of preserving history. The students of Lugou Bridge No. 1 Primary School act as guides. They share the stories of the bridge and Wanping City with visitors. They talk about the ancient stone bridge, the oldest multi-arch stone bridge in Beijing. They speak of the resilience of their community and the echoes of a turbulent past. The students also learn about Zhao Dengyu, a general who died defending Lugou Bridge during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. His tomb lies south of the bridge. The students visit the tomb, leaving flowers and messages of peace. Lugou Bridge No. 1 Primary School created a special textbook, “My Hometown: Lugou Bridge”. This textbook covers all grade levels and instills a sense of responsibility, gratitude, and pride in the students.
