Have you ever felt the ground tremble beneath your feet? That’s how it must have felt in the 1970s during the construction of 200 Clarendon. Originally known as the John Hancock Tower this iconic Boston skyscraper boasts a history as turbulent as the winds that once threatened to topple it. 200 Clarendon isn’t just a building it’s a testament to human ambition and resilience.

Standing before 200 Clarendon you see its sleek glass facade reflecting the city’s vibrant energy. But behind this polished exterior lies a tale of engineering marvels and near disasters. Its construction was fraught with challenges. Temporary retaining walls during excavation failed causing damage to surrounding structures including the historic Trinity Church. This resulted in an eleven million dollar lawsuit.

The innovative blue reflective glass was another problem. The 500-pound window panes began to detach and fall endangering pedestrians. Streets were closed when winds reached 45 mph. Thousands of panes had to be replaced with single-paned heat-treated ones costing millions. For months plywood covered the missing glass earning the building nicknames like “Plywood Ranch” and “Plywood Palace”.

The building’s sway in strong winds also caused motion sickness among upper-floor occupants. To combat this a massive tuned mass damper was installed on the 58th floor. This 300-ton weight helps stabilize the tower preventing it from overturning in strong winds. Despite the challenges 200 Clarendon stands tall.

Even the building’s name changed. After John Hancock Insurance’s lease expired in 2015 the tower was renamed 200 Clarendon after its street address. The building’s story is far from over. 200 Clarendon continues to play an important role in the city’s skyline. It is a symbol of Boston’s enduring spirit and the remarkable engineering feats that have shaped its identity. It continues to serve as an urban landmark a testament to architectural innovation. And a reminder that even seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome.
