Hidden within Hanoi’s bustling streets lies Chùa Cổng Yến, a temple whispering tales of devotion and resilience. Have you ever wondered what stories these ancient walls hold? Chùa Cổng Yến stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Vietnamese people. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. The temple’s origins trace back to the village of Cổng Yến, the birthplace of Đức Thánh Quảng Hành. This local hero played a crucial role in Vietnam’s resistance against the Yuan invaders between 1285 and 1288. He aided King Trần Nhân Tông in repelling the enemy. His bravery and dedication earned him the title of Bản Cảnh Thành hoàng Quảng Hành. He is revered as a guardian spirit. Chùa Cổng Yến serves as a focal point for the annual Cổng Yến Festival. This vibrant celebration takes place from the 12th to the 13th of the first lunar month. The festivities begin with a solemn procession known as “lễ yết” on the morning of the 12th. This is followed by lively competitions, traditional games, and captivating cultural performances. The main festival day, the 13th, starts with a grand procession. The procession involves local youth carrying symbolic offerings. This sets the stage for the official opening ceremony. The heart of the festival lies in the ritual offerings made to Đức Thánh Quảng Hành. Two groups, one male and one female, perform a traditional dance. This dance involves rhythmic steps and movements, expressing reverence and devotion. The festival continues with more games and performances. It brings together the entire community and attracts visitors from far and wide. Chùa Cổng Yến and its festival are a living testament to the rich cultural heritage of the thirteen villages that existed during the Lý Nhân Tông dynasty. They offer a glimpse into Vietnam’s vibrant past. Chùa Cổng Yến isn’t just a temple. It’s a vibrant hub where the echoes of history blend with the energy of the present.
