Lost in the labyrinthine alleys of Bangkok a glimpse of gold catches your eye. It’s Wat Chan Nai a temple whispered about in hushed tones.

Wat Chan Nai isn’t one of the grand temples that dominate the Bangkok skyline. It’s tucked away a hidden gem. Its history stretches back to the middle Ayutthaya period. Legend says a nobleman built it as a votive offering. His daughter had recovered from a terrible illness. In gratitude he dedicated this temple to Buddha. The temple fell into disrepair during later Ayutthaya. However it was restored during the reigns of Kings Rama I and Rama III. You can see influences of Chinese architecture from that era. The ordination hall lacks the traditional gable apex a unique feature of Wat Chan Nai.

The temple sits on the banks of the Khlong Dan canal. Its location made it a perfect setting for a famous movie. In 1974 scenes from The Man with the Golden Gun were filmed here. The boat chase scene was shot along the canal and around Wat Chan Nai.

Wat Chan Nai holds a unique annual tradition. It’s called Chak Phra. The temple’s Buddha relics are placed on a beautifully decorated barge. A procession takes the barge along the canals. It winds its way through Khlong Dan to Khlong Bangkok Yai and then onto Khlong Bangkok Noi. The journey culminates at the Taling Chan District Office. Then it returns the same day after a shared monk’s meal. This tradition has continued for over 200 years. It’s the only Chak Phra ceremony still held in Bangkok.

Today Wat Chan Nai remains a small quiet temple. But it holds a special place in the hearts of the local community. The Buddha’s relics are enshrined in a unique way. They aren’t housed in a pagoda. This makes Wat Chan Nai especially significant to the devout. As you leave Wat Chan Nai take a moment to reflect on its quiet strength. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Bangkok.
