“Did you know there’s a temple in Bangkok built on a mere two acres?” I ask, gesturing towards Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang. Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang might be compact, but its story is anything but small. Built in 1757, Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang shares a connection with its neighbor, Wat Bang Khun Thian Nok. One of the individuals who contributed to the construction of Wat Nok also helped establish Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang. Imagine the dedication it took to build not one, but two temples! The temple experienced a period of desertion before being revived in 1864 by Phra Athikan Wan. He oversaw renovations, ushering in a new era of prosperity for Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang. The ordination hall, initially constructed in 1764, underwent renovations in 1940. It houses the principal Buddha image, Chat Thong. Encircling the ordination hall are eight chedis built in the Ayutthaya style. This style is known for its elegant, bell-shaped structures. Five uniquely shaped pavilions line the riverbank, accompanied by a remarkable longtail boat carved from a single tree. The consecrated boundary surrounding the ordination hall stretches an impressive 82.37 meters in width and 44.58 meters in length. Wat Bang Khun Thian Klang is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in Bangkok. It stands as a quiet haven amidst the city’s vibrant energy.
