A wooden ceiling that filters daylight. That’s part of the planned renovation for Collège Rousseau. But its story began long before these modern plans.

Collège Rousseau. It stands as a testament to Geneva’s commitment to education. Named after the famous Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, this institution has been shaping young minds since its founding in 1969.

Before Collège Rousseau, Geneva hadn’t opened a new upper secondary school since the Collège Calvin in 1559. Demographic growth made it necessary to create new schools. Collège Rousseau became the first of these new institutions. Architect Alain Ritter designed the building.

One of Collège Rousseau’s early innovations was its commitment to coeducation. It was the first coeducational college in Geneva. Previously, boys went to Collège Calvin. Most girls attended the École Supérieure des Jeunes Filles, now Collège Voltaire.

In 2019, Collège Rousseau had approximately 800 students. Around 100 teachers and fifteen administrative staff members supported them. The college developed an original maturity program without sections. This unique approach allowed students to gain knowledge in different fields. They could combine sciences with languages or arts.

Looking ahead, renovations are planned. While the exterior will remain largely unchanged, the interior will be modernized. A key feature will be that wooden ceiling. It will allow natural light to filter through.

Collège Rousseau is more than just a building. It’s a place of learning, innovation and progress. It continues to uphold the values of its namesake. It prepares students for the challenges of the future.

Today, Collège Rousseau stands as a proud landmark in Geneva. It symbolizes the city’s dedication to education. Its rich history and forward-thinking approach make it a vital part of the community. As the college evolves, it remains committed to providing an exceptional learning experience for generations to come.
