Founded at the request of Dr. Ernest Holmes, the Hollywood Church of Religious Science stands as a beacon of spiritual learning. Its story is deeply intertwined with the Religious Science movement. Let me share some insights about this unique place.
Dr. Robert H. Bitzer established this first branch in Hollywood. This happened at the request of Dr. Ernest Holmes. Holmes founded the Religious Science movement. Bitzer’s dedication and understanding of the teaching made the Hollywood Church a renowned center. It became famous for metaphysical learning worldwide.
Many of Bitzer’s students became ministers. They went on to further the teaching of Religious Science. For 57 years, Dr. Bitzer served as pastor. In 1987, Dr. Domenic A. Polifrone became co-pastor. They were a great team for three years.
In June 1990, Dr. Polifrone started his own work. He formed the New Thought Center of Los Angeles. Dr. Bitzer again took over the full-time pastorship. He remained until his death on May 30, 1994. He was 98 years old.
His wife, Marguerite C. Bitzer, was also an ordained minister. She played a key role in the church’s growth. To continue Dr. Bitzer’s work, Dr. Polifrone returned. He became the Spiritual Director. His New Thought Center merged with the Hollywood Church on March 3, 1996.
In 2002, Dr. Polifrone went on sabbatical. He asked Reverend Pamela A. MacGregor to be the assistant Spiritual Director. Reverend Pam accepted. At Dr. Polifrone’s request, she is now the Spiritual Director. She leads the Science of Mind Spiritual Center Los Angeles.
Dr. Ernest Holmes did not originally intend for Religious Science to be a church. He saw it more as a teaching institution. Many member churches refer to themselves as centers. The Hollywood Church of Religious Science embraced this concept.
Religious Science emphasizes health through positive attitudes. It aims to enhance self-esteem. It is open to metaphysical aspects. These aspects come from the Judeo-Christian tradition and eastern religions.
Ernest Holmes defined Religious Science as a correlation. It links laws of science, opinions of philosophy and revelations of religion. This is applied to human needs. His philosophy of positive mental attitude had great appeal. It resonated with many people.
