Established in 2005, Capalaba State College stands as a beacon of learning. Before that, it was two schools. Let’s dive into the vibrant history of Capalaba State College.
Capalaba State College wasn’t always one entity. It began as two separate institutions. There was Capalaba State School and Capalaba State High School. In 2005, these two schools joined forces. This created the Capalaba State College we see today.
The story begins much earlier for Capalaba State School. It opened its doors on July 5, 1880. The location was on Mt Cotton Road. There were only 22 pupils and one teacher. The school quickly grew. By 1884, the average attendance reached 43. Timber was booming. But the timber industry declined. Families left and the school closed in 1922.
Local support was strong. It forced the school to reopen in 1923. Tom McGrath became Headmaster in 1925. He stayed for 27 years. In 1959, the school moved to its current site. It continued to grow. By 1970, there were 338 students.
Now let’s turn to Capalaba State High School. This school opened in 1978. It occupied 13.6 hectares on School Road. There were 189 Year 8 students. Eleven teachers were there including the first Principal, Tony Marsland. The high school met the needs of a growing population. The Redland Shire was booming with residential developments. The official opening was on October 20, 1979. The Minister for Education, V. J. Bird, officiated.
Then came 2005. Capalaba State School and Capalaba State High School joined. Capalaba State College was born. It opened on January 24, 2005. Over 1000 students were enrolled.
Today, Capalaba State College thrives. It offers education from Prep to Year 12. The College has a motto. It is “Live, Love, Learn, Leave a Legacy.”
Capalaba State College boasts many facilities. There are two spacious Resource Centres. A 25m heated pool stands ready. Four science laboratories offer modern equipment. Three Computer Labs buzz with activity. There are 75 additional laptops for student use. Virtual Schooling labs support digital learning. Six Manual Arts workshops provide hands-on experience. Three specialist Art rooms inspire creativity. Two Restaurant Standard kitchens allow culinary exploration. Two sewing rooms cater to fashion enthusiasts. A Music block features sound-proof practice rooms. A dedicated dance studio encourages movement. A Fitness Gymnasium promotes physical health. Two Auditoriums host performances. A Cultural Centre offers tiered seating. Special Education Facilities support diverse learners. Extensive grounds and sporting facilities encourage outdoor activities. A Media Centre features a Studio and Video editing suites.
Students participate in many events. These include the Swimming Carnival. The Athletics Carnival features field and track events. Cross Country races test endurance.
The student population is divided into four Houses. Peel House is named after Peel Island. Coochie House is named after Coochiemudlo Island. Russel House is named after Russell Island. Moreton House is named after Moreton Island.
Capalaba State College keeps its community informed. A monthly eNewsletter shares current news. Printed copies are available. An annual Yearbook is published in December. The College annual report appears on the website in June.
