A skyscraper piercing the Milanese sky. That’s Centro Diaz. Its sleek lines a stark contrast to the Duomo’s gothic grandeur. Centro Diaz also known as the Grattacielo della Terrazza Martini stands tall. It’s a testament to post-war Italian design. It wasn’t always meant to be so striking. The initial plans for this spot date back to 1938. They envisioned something quite different. The 1938 plan was for a building on the south side of Piazza del Duomo. This was to complete the piazza. Then came a 1951 addition a tower idea aligned with the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This changed everything. A competition in 1953 chose architect Luigi Mattioni’s design. However Mattioni had to shorten his initial tower design by over 11 meters. Construction was finally finished in 1957. The Centro Diaz with its height of 65 meters became a symbol of modern Milan. The Terrazza Martini became a stylish meeting place. This rooftop terrace hosted glamorous events. Famous film stars attended. Even Federico Fellini’s Dolce Vita premiered here. It was a center for cinematic gatherings. Critics and directors met. Films were shown before their official release. The Centro Diaz thus wasn’t just a building. It was a vibrant hub reflecting post-war Italy. It became an iconic symbol of the city.
