“Could this unassuming spot truly whisper tales of Russia’s industrial dawn?” This is Parovoz Cherepanovykh 1-1-0. It may seem like just another address. But this location is linked to a remarkable piece of Russian history. It involves the Cherepanovs, a father and son duo of inventors.

Yefim and Miron Cherepanov were serfs. They belonged to the Demidovs, a prominent family of factory owners. These men weren’t just laborers. They were brilliant engineers.

In the 1800s Yefim constructed an advanced machine-building plant. It was equipped with cutting-edge metal-cutting lathes. Yefim became the chief mechanic for all factories in Nizhny Tagil. Miron became his deputy. After his father’s death, Miron took over as chief mechanic.

The Cherepanovs improved machinery. Their work impacted blast furnaces, gold mining, and ironworks. They also worked on sawmills and flourmills.

Their most significant work was with steam engines. From 1820, the Cherepanovs built around 20 steam engines. These engines ranged from 2 to 60 horsepower.

In 1833-34, they achieved a historic feat. The Cherepanovs constructed the first Russian steam locomotive. They also created a cast-iron railroad connecting a factory to a copper mine. The track gauge was 5 ft 6 in. They built a second locomotive. It was sent to Saint Petersburg.

Despite their success, the Cherepanovs’ invention lacked support. Horse traction replaced their steam locomotives. Their innovation was ahead of its time.

Parovoz Cherepanovykh 1-1-0 serves as a reminder. It connects us to Yefim and Miron Cherepanov. It reminds us of their ingenuity and contribution to Russian industrial history. It’s a place to remember the beginning of Russian railroads.
