Lost to time, yet whispering stories of devotion and scandal, stands Godstow Nunnery. Here, on the banks of the River Thames, echoes of Benedictine nuns mingle with the rustle of leaves. Godstow Abbey, founded in 1133 by Edith of Winchester, was once a sanctuary for aristocratic women. Edith, a widow, had a vision guiding her to this very spot. A light from heaven, she claimed, touched the earth here. With the blessing of King Henry I, she built Godstow Nunnery for 24 “gentlewomen”. Godstow Abbey flourished under royal patronage, becoming a prominent religious house. Its walls witnessed not only prayer but also political intrigue. The nunnery is forever linked to the tragic tale of “Fair Rosamund” Clifford, mistress of King Henry II. Rosamund died young and was buried here in the abbey church. Her tomb, adorned with flowers and candles, became a local shrine. Bishop Hugh of Lincoln, disapproving of the reverence shown to a royal mistress, ordered her remains moved to a less prominent location. Even in death, Rosamund stirred controversy. The story goes that her spirit, disturbed by the relocation, still haunts these grounds. Godstow Abbey’s history is not just one of piety. Records tell of nuns interacting with scholars from Oxford University, leading to scandals and excommunications. The abbey faced financial struggles despite housing wealthy nuns accustomed to an extravagant lifestyle. The Dissolution of the Monasteries brought Godstow Abbey’s religious life to an end. The nuns were pensioned off, and the abbey buildings were repurposed into a mansion called Godstow House. The Civil War dealt a devastating blow to the former nunnery, leaving it in ruins, quarried for its stone. What we see today are the ghostly remnants of walls, a blocked doorway, and the shell of a 16th-century chapel, possibly part of the abbess’s lodging. Imagine the lives lived within these walls, the prayers whispered, and the secrets kept. Godstow Nunnery stands as a testament to a turbulent past, a place where faith, scandal, and history intertwine.
