Bharathidasan was born K. Subburathinam in 1891. He later adopted the name Bharathidasan. This name meant follower of Bharathi. He admired Subramania Bharathi a renowned Tamil poet.

Bharathidasan was more than just a poet. He was a firebrand. He was deeply influenced by Periyar and his self-respect movement. His writings championed socio-political change. They fueled the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu.

In 1982 Bharathidasan University was established. It was named after him. The university’s motto is inspired by his poem. It declares “We will create a brave new world”.

His poems even found their way into films. “Thamizhukum Amudenru per” is one example. “Thunbam Nergayil” is another. These poems touched countless hearts.

Bharathidasan received the Sahitya Academy Award. It was awarded posthumously for his play Pisiraandhaiyaar. His legacy continues. In 2001 a commemorative stamp honored Bharathidasan.

Tamil Nadu presents the Bharathidasan Award annually. This award recognizes Tamil poets. Bharathidasan Institute of Management also bears his name.
