Established in 1892, Franklin Field has a rich history. It has been a vital part of the Boston community for over a century. Originally called Franklin Field, it’s now known as Harambee Park. This 45-acre park is a hub for sports and recreation. Franklin Field boasts facilities for basketball, cricket, soccer, lacrosse, football, and even little league baseball. The park has undergone a series of renovations. These improvements began with a master plan in 2016. The plan focused on optimizing the fields for sunlight. It also included adding pathways, pedestrian lighting, and a new play area along Blue Hill Avenue. The renovations were completed in phases. The first phase, finished in 2018, included a new play space, basketball courts, and improved entrances. Phase two, completed in 2021, focused on the soccer and lacrosse fields and pathways. The football field and practice field saw improvements in phase three, finalized in 2022. Most recently, phase four introduced a competition-level cricket field with lighting and a practice field. This phase began in 2023 and is expected to be fully complete by late summer or early fall 2024. The park is constantly evolving. It continues to serve as a vibrant recreational space for the community.
