A colossal structure it was meant to be. Tradewinds Square a giant among giants. Tradewinds Square was planned to be a monumental development. It would have reshaped the Kuala Lumpur skyline. This ambitious project was envisioned on the site of the former Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel and Kompleks Antarabangsa. These buildings were demolished in 2013 to make way for Tradewinds Square.
Tradewinds Square was conceived as an integrated development. It was to house Grade A offices serviced apartments a 6-star hotel and a retail podium. The sheer scale of Tradewinds Square was astounding. Its planned height was to reach 775 meters with 150 floors. The project was ambitious. It aimed to create a new landmark in Kuala Lumpur. This would have been an iconic addition to the city’s skyline.
DP Architects and Woods Bagot were the masterminds behind the architectural design of Tradewinds Square. Leslie E Robertson Associates was involved in structural engineering. The project faced significant delays however. Construction was expected to begin in early 2013. It was initially slated for completion in 2022. But construction was halted in 2018. The ambitious plans for Tradewinds Square were ultimately shelved. The project’s estimated cost was RM6 billion. That’s approximately $1.37 billion USD.
Tradewinds Square would have been conveniently situated near the MR7 Raja Chulan Monorail station. This would have made it easily accessible by public transport. Tradewinds Corporation Berhad was the ambitious developer behind this incredible project. The plot ratio for the development was even increased to 16 in 2016. A testament to the planned scale of Tradewinds Square.
Today the site of Tradewinds Square serves as a parking lot. It’s a stark reminder of a project that never came to fruition. A poignant example of the fluctuating fortunes of mega-developments. It stands as a quiet testament to ambition and the challenges faced in realizing colossal visions. Yet the whispers of what could have been linger in the air around Tradewinds Square. A reminder of the incredible vision that was once planned for this site.
