Envision a daring game. A bag of gold coins dangles high above. This is the story of Bangkok’s Giant Swing.

The Giant Swing stands before you. Locally, it is known as Sao Chingcha. This religious structure has a fascinating history. King Rama I built the Giant Swing in 1784. It stood in front of the Devasthan shrine then.

Imagine young men soaring through the air. They swung high attempting to grab the bag of gold. The bag hung 50 feet above the ground. Imagine the thrill and danger. Successful swingers kept the treasure. Many failed.

The Giant Swing is made of teak wood. This wood came from Phrae province. This is in northern Thailand. The structure reaches over 21 meters tall. That is about 69 feet.

The swing played a key role in a Brahman festival. The festival took place in December. It followed the main rice harvest. However, King Rama VII discontinued the rite in 1935. Too many accidents occurred. It was deemed too dangerous.

The Giant Swing faced structural damage. Lightning once struck it during Rama II’s reign. It was renovated in 1920. It was moved to its current location. This made space for a gas plant.

Major reconstruction occurred in 2005. Workers used six teak tree trunks. Two trunks measured over 3.5 meters in circumference. These were over 30 meters tall. The remaining four provided support. They had a circumference of 2.30 meters. They stood 20 meters high.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej dedicated the rebuilt swing. Royal ceremonies marked the occasion in September 2007. The original swing’s timbers are preserved. You can find them in the Bangkok National Museum.

The Giant Swing, together with Wat Suthat, was proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005.

The Giant Swing is more than just a structure. It represents a piece of Bangkok’s cultural heritage. It reminds us of a daring past. The Giant Swing stands tall. It is a symbol of faith and history.
