Have you ever wondered what life is like inside a prison? Well, today we are standing at a place that holds secrets, stories, and a glimpse into the justice system of Brunei. It’s the Jerudong Prison, a place that dates back to the 1st of March 1954. In the beginning, the prison was a small facility that could only accommodate 28 inmates, a far cry from its current capacity. Over time, the need for a larger facility became apparent as the prison population grew. The new structure of Jerudong Prison was built and was opened on 1st of February 1980. It had the capacity of 130 male and 16 female inmates. This new prison serves as a central hub for male prisoners, housing inmates serving sentences ranging from just one day to life, death row inmates, and those awaiting trial.
Jerudong Prison was initially run by the Brunei Police Force, but in 1959, it was transferred to the newly formed Prisons Department. In the 1970s, security became a crucial issue due to escapes and fugitive inmates. The government responded by recruiting retired Gurkhas from Singapore and Hong Kong to form a dedicated security force for the prison. Jerudong Prison has always been a place of transformation, striving to rehabilitate inmates and help them become contributing members of society. The Prison Department provides many programs for inmates, including training in carpentry, agriculture, culinary arts, and landscaping. The goal is to help inmates learn new skills and find employment upon their release.
While the prison has a long and fascinating history, it’s important to remember that behind its walls are individuals who have made mistakes and are seeking redemption. It’s a place of hardship, but also a place of hope, where individuals have the chance to change their lives. As we continue on our tour, you’ll learn more about Brunei’s unique criminal justice system, and the role it plays in the life of the nation.
