Journey back to 1872. Imagine Bucharest bustling with life, yet a group of 218 faithful residing “outside Iancului barrier” felt a spiritual void. Their old church, Biserica Iancului Vechi, was overflowing. They yearned for a new sanctuary, a place where their burgeoning community could gather and worship. This longing marked the inception of what we now know as Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Haralambie – Iancu Nou Bălăneanu. A generous merchant, Stanciu Ioan Bălăneanu, donated the very land upon which we stand. His donation, coupled with the contributions of 24 other devoted parishioners, set the foundation for this beacon of faith. Construction commenced swiftly in June 1873, culminating in its consecration just six months later in December of the same year. Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Haralambie – Iancu Nou Bălăneanu became a testament to their collective faith. This church isn’t dedicated solely to Saint Haralambie. It also honors Saint Nicholas and Saints Constantine and Helen, enriching its spiritual tapestry. The church boasts a triconic design, a traditional Byzantine style, highlighted by two imposing octagonal towers. The walls, constructed with “handmade” Oltenian brick and lime mortar, whisper stories of the past. Look closely at the intricate geometric and floral friezes adorning the exterior. These details add a touch of artistry to the church’s robust structure. Inside, the nave is divided by two rows of three columns, each capped with Corinthian capitals. These columns support the arches and the central dome, creating a sense of grandeur and reverence. Over the years, Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Haralambie – Iancu Nou Bălăneanu has undergone several renovations. The church has been strengthened and embellished, ensuring its continued presence as a spiritual haven. Even the original fresco by Gheorghe Vânătoru has been painstakingly restored, preserving the rich artistry within. Adding to the church’s historical significance is the presence of a wooden memorial cross in the courtyard. This cross commemorates the heroes who sacrificed their lives, a solemn reminder of their bravery.
