“Gullvik, Gullvik… sounds like a place from a Nordic saga!” you might think. Actually, Gullvik is a district in Malmö. It blends homes, industry and business.

Gullvik lies within Fosie. It sits nestled between Nydalavägen, Eriksfältsgatan, Ystadvägen and Inre ringvägen. A railway called Kontinentalbanan splits Gullvik in two.

Along Gullvik’s northern edge, companies thrive. The remaining area houses villas and terraced houses. Most buildings in the north date back to the 1980s. Some are older. Gullviksskolan and Gullviks förskola are in the northern part. They cater to younger children.

Once upon a time, industries flourished here. KJ Levin, Gullviks fabriksaktiebolag and AB Zonen all operated within Gullvik.

Let’s journey back to 1823. A farm in Fosie was known as Lovisaefrid. This name honored pastor Friberg’s wife, Lovisa. In 1898, the Kontinentalbanan railway connected Malmö and Trelleborg.

Around 1900, Lovisaefrid became Gullvik. The main house stood where Lillviksgatan and Silverviksgatan cross today. Barns and stables formed an L-shape toward Lövviksgatan.

Farmland gave rise to neighborhoods. Eriksfält, Maryhill and Gullvik emerged. In 1920, Philip Sandström founded Gullviks fabriker. Previously, he ran Philip Sandström & Co. His factory produced belt wax and oils for farms.

Fosie became part of Malmö in 1931. The following year, Gullvik expanded. Permits allowed factory construction in the southern area. In 1947, part of Gullviks Fabriks AB moved to Johanneslust. It took over Matakis’ facilities. Matakis had produced roofing felt and chemicals there since 1904. Later, they relocated to new premises in Industrihamnen.

In 1974, P Nilssons Bygg AB acquired Gullvik’s properties. During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, tenants conducted various businesses in some buildings. The director’s villa was demolished in 1975. Gustav Magnusson, Gullviks Fabriks’ vice president until 1974, lived there. His home was on Silverviksgatan near the factory.

In 1976, everything valuable was removed from the villa. Windows, doors and flooring disappeared. By 1978, PNB had sold the plots. New buildings rose on the land.

So, Gullvik evolved. It changed from farmland to industry to a modern residential area.
