Have you ever imagined a museum housed in a former gunpowder factory? Welcome to the Museum Elsbethen-Glasenbach also known as the Museum zum Pulvermacher. It’s right here before you a testament to history and craftsmanship. This unassuming building at Johann-Herbst-Strasse 35 in Elsbethen-Glasenbach was once the heart of gunpowder production. For centuries Elsbethen produced this explosive material. The Museum Elsbethen-Glasenbach stands as a silent witness.
The Museum Elsbethen-Glasenbach isn’t just about gunpowder. It tells a much richer story. Sepp Scheibl started collecting and restoring valuable cultural artifacts in 1970. He then began their museum preparation. The museum opened in July 1990 in the former home of the gunpowder makers. It boasts approximately 300 square meters of exhibition space. The building itself built in 1838 is fascinating. It was a workshop for gunpowder makers. The family lived next door. Because it wasn’t a residential building it had a unique feature a bread oven. Such ovens were forbidden in homes due to fire risk.
Inside the Museum Elsbethen-Glasenbach you’ll discover more about gunpowder production. You’ll learn about the lives of the gunpowder makers. You’ll learn about the dangers they faced. A highlight is the scale model of a water-powered powder mixing and stamping mill. There are also rare exhibits related to gunpowder making.
But the museum goes beyond gunpowder. It showcases rural handcrafts. There’s a fully equipped shoemaker’s workshop. There’s also a distillery and the aforementioned bread oven. Ammonites belemnites and other fossilized remains are on display. These come from the Glasenbachklamm gorge. They take you millions of years back in time. An 8000 year old child’s grave from the Neolithic period shows the area was inhabited then. The museum has a space for lectures readings and educational activities for school groups.
The Museum Elsbethen-Glasenbach is open Wednesdays and Sundays from mid-April to mid-October. It opens from 10 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm. Group visits are possible by appointment.
