From atop Liberty Hill, the cries of striking workers echoed across the San Pedro harbor in 1923. Liberty Hill wasn’t just a hill. It was a symbol of defiance. The Marine Transport Workers Industrial Union 510, part of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), had chosen this spot to rally. They were protesting low wages, terrible working conditions, and the imprisonment of fellow union activists under California’s Criminal Syndicalism Act. Liberty Hill became their platform, their soapbox, their fortress against injustice. Ninety ships lay idle in the harbor, a testament to the strike’s impact. The workers’ demands were simple: fair treatment and freedom for their comrades. The air crackled with tension as the strikers held their ground. On May 15th, a dramatic scene unfolded on Liberty Hill. Upton Sinclair, the famous writer, stood before a crowd of 3,000 striking longshoremen. He began to read the Bill of Rights, a powerful statement of American freedoms. But his words were cut short. Sinclair was arrested for simply reading the Constitution, an act that highlighted the suppression of free speech at the time. The strike ultimately failed to achieve its immediate goals. However, Liberty Hill became a symbol of the struggle for workers’ rights. The events that transpired here in 1923 helped lay the foundation for the successes of the labor movement in the 1930s. Even the Liberty Hill Foundation, established in 1976, draws its name and inspiration from this pivotal moment in labor history. The Criminal Syndicalism Act, used to silence dissenters, was later deemed unconstitutional in 1968. Liberty Hill stands as a reminder of the fight for justice and the importance of free speech. It echoes with the voices of those who dared to challenge the status quo, and their struggle continues to inspire today.
