Here at the Ministry Of Education, Brunei’s commitment to shaping future generations becomes palpable. Established on January 1, 1984, the Ministry Of Education plays a vital role in overseeing the nation’s educational framework. The Ministry Of Education headquarters is located right here in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Imagine the Ministry Of Education as the central nervous system of Brunei’s education system. It formulates policies, implements programs, and ensures that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Ministry’s work began taking shape with the founding of the Jabatan Pelajaran or Department of Education in 1951.
Did you know that in 1970, the Suruhanjaya Pelajaran or Education Commission was established? Its purpose was to assess and enhance Brunei’s educational system. The Department of Education then established the Examination Unit, Examination Board, and Education Council in 1974.
Following Brunei’s independence, the Department of Education was renamed the Kementerian Pelajaran dan Kesihatan, which means Ministry of Education and Health. In 1989, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health were split into two distinct entities. This restructuring allowed for a more regional approach to texts, school curricula, and certification.
Consider the Ministry Of Education’s role in embracing technology. In the 21st century, the ministry upgraded its educational services with ICT programs centered on e-education. These included edunet, e-learning, education information, and digital libraries. The Department of Information and Communication Technology was established in 2001.
The Ministry Of Education is led by a minister. Romaizah Mohd Salleh has been in office since June 7, 2022. The ministry’s annual budget reflects the government’s investment in education. In the fiscal year 2022–23, the Ministry Of Education was allocated B$583 million.
The Director General of Education office is located in Block B, 5th Floor of the Old Building, Ministry of Education. The vision of the Director General of Education is to enhance stakeholders’ impact to maximize the fullest potential for all. Its mission is cohesive policy and governance to support quality education and professionalism.
The Ministry Of Education continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing needs of students and the nation. As you stand here, remember that the Ministry Of Education is more than just a building. It is a symbol of Brunei’s dedication to learning and progress.
