Consider this: Gann Academy wasn’t always Gann Academy. It started as The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston in 1997.
Welcome to Gann Academy in Waltham Massachusetts. This is no ordinary high school. Gann Academy is a coeducational Jewish high school. It stands as a testament to innovative education.
Daniel Lehmann, the former head of school, founded it. His vision was clear to create a community. This community would embrace diverse expressions of Judaism. Initially, the school was near Brandeis University. Soon it needed more space. In 1998, Gann Academy moved to a building on Prospect Street. The school even used Temple Beth Israel’s basement for classrooms.
The transformation wasn’t just physical. In 2003, it was renamed Gann Academy. This name honored Joseph Gann, a generous philanthropist. Gann donated $5 million to the school. His contribution helped shape its future.
In 2004, Gann Academy found its permanent home. A new 110000 sq ft campus was built. This location had a unique past. It was once the site of the Murphy Army Hospital.
Gann Academy embraced its location. The U.S. history course explores the history of disability in America. The site had connections to the Walter E. Fernald School. This school was one of the oldest institutions for people with disabilities. Students curated a museum exhibit. It showcased artifacts like early 20th-century crutches.
