You stand before the Evergreen Cemetery plaque, a sturdy aluminum marker boldly proclaiming its historical significance. The Evergreen Cemetery, founded in 1894, holds the stories of countless lives lived and passed. It’s more than just a resting place; it’s a testament to the vibrant history of Houston, interwoven with the stories of its diverse inhabitants.

Imagine a time when the city was growing rapidly and the need for a cemetery for Houston’s African American community was crucial. Alexander Kelley saw this need. A formerly enslaved person and entrepreneur, he purchased 25 acres to establish a cemetery that would provide a dignified final resting place for his community. This land had once been a cotton plantation, where enslaved people toiled beneath the scorching Texan sun.

The Evergreen Cemetery holds the remains of these enslaved people but also honors the lives of Buffalo Soldiers, veterans of World War I, and many others. The cemetery, though a constant reminder of mortality, also tells stories of resilience, perseverance, and the enduring bonds of family and community.

Over the years, the cemetery has faced challenges. The extension of Lockwood Drive in 1960 bisected the land, disturbing 490 bodies and unfortunately, disrupting its integrity and peaceful atmosphere. However, local volunteers have stepped up to preserve this historic and sacred ground. They meticulously tend to the graves, plant trees, and ensure that the legacy of those buried within its boundaries is not forgotten.

Evergreen Cemetery serves as a reminder of the city’s dynamic past and the deep connections forged within its diverse communities. As you stand before this plaque, take a moment to reflect on the lives that unfolded on this very ground, and let the stories of the past whisper their tales on the gentle breeze.
