Could a church survive losing its roof? In 1893, Aldine First United Methodist Church faced that very question. A powerful cyclone ripped through the area, tearing off the roof and demolishing the east end. The damage was so extensive that the building sat unused for six years. Standing here, it’s hard to imagine this vibrant church facing such devastation. Aldine First United Methodist Church has a history as resilient as the faith it represents. It all began in 1841, in a humble schoolhouse near Ballinger’s Mill. Initially called Nazareth Church, the congregation relied on itinerant ministers who visited every six to eight weeks. As the community grew, so did their determination to build a proper place of worship. In 1868, plans were laid for a brick structure, marking a significant step for what would become Aldine First United Methodist Church. Through the years, the church has seen expansion and renovation. The old Aldine schoolhouse found a new purpose behind the church, becoming a beloved social hall. This space hosted countless dinners, social gatherings, and even the church’s first annual Duck Suppers. In more recent times, the addition of an education building in 1982 brought new life with a gym, kitchen, and Sunday school rooms. The church’s commitment to growth continued with the connection of the church and education buildings in 2001. The sanctuary expanded, an elevator was installed, and accessibility for all became a priority. Aldine First United Methodist Church isn’t just a building, it’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
