How do you move a church? That’s the question the congregation of Bethany First Baptist Church faced in 1983. Bethany First Baptist Church was founded on a dream and a prayer in 1980 by Reverend Doctor Ronald Benson. The church started small with only 10 members. But it quickly grew to over 200, touching the lives of its members through its dedication to preaching, teaching, and counseling. By 1983, the church had outgrown its space at the Ella Austin Community Center and began holding services in the Dellcrest Plaza Shopping Mall. They soon found a more permanent home on Highway 90 East. In a twist of fate, the building was donated to the congregation. However, there was a catch – the church had to be moved. This presented a logistical challenge. But through divine inspiration, Mother Claudell Benson negotiated the purchase of land at 202 Noblewood Drive. And so, Bethany First Baptist Church literally hit the road. The building was physically moved down Highway 90 to its current location in 1986. This act of faith and perseverance cemented Bethany First Baptist Church’s place in San Antonio’s religious landscape. Today, Bethany First Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community.
