It stands on Wiesenhüttenplatz. The Parkhotel dates back to 1905. Wilhelm Gömöri, a restaurateur, built it. He was born in Hungary. The architects Franz Vietze and Wilhelm Helfrich designed it.
The Parkhotel’s facades are elaborate. They feature red sandstone and green tiles. These are in neo-baroque and neoclassical styles. Figurative sculptures adorn the portal and windows. Bruno Diamant created a bronze bust of Kaiser Wilhelm I.
Originally, Gömöri named the hotel Kaiserhof. It was extremely luxurious. It bordered the park-like garden of the Wiesenhütten estate. Today, Wiesenhüttenplatz reminds us of this green space. Wilhelm and his son Franz were jokingly called “the Lords of Wiesenhütten”.
During World War II, the Parkhotel suffered no damage. The US Army used it as its press headquarters. This lasted for twelve years. In 1952, the property was returned. Much of the movable inventory was missing.
Franz Gömöri renovated the Parkhotel in 1920. He earned culinary acclaim for it. The hotel’s appetizers received awards from 1925 to 1937. Even in its eighth decade, the Parkhotel’s kitchen was known for fine dining. Paul Bocuse, the famous chef, made one of his first appearances abroad here.
In 1966, the family sold its stake in the Parkhotel. An extension building was inaugurated in 1970. This increased the number of beds to 416 in 280 rooms. The Parkhotel was among the first German establishments to embrace nouvelle cuisine.
In 1979, the Bank for Social Economy acquired the Parkhotel. Mövenpick International took over in 1983. They operated it as their flagship in Germany for almost a decade. Forte Plc, a British company, acquired the Parkhotel in 1994. Since 1995, it has been known as Le Mèridien Parkhotel Frankfurt.
Today, Le Mèridien Parkhotel Frankfurt provides a symbiosis of architecture, style and luxury. Its location near the train station makes it a popular meeting place.
