High above the Arroyo Seco the Colorado Street Bridge stands majestic. Its soaring arches a testament to human ingenuity. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a Pasadena landmark a piece of history etched in concrete and steel.
Completed in 1913 the Colorado Street Bridge was once hailed as the world’s highest concrete bridge. Imagine the marvel it must have been. A feat of engineering spanning the deep chasm of the Arroyo. Before its construction crossing meant a treacherous descent and ascent. Horses and wagons struggled. The Colorado Street Bridge changed all that. It connected Pasadena to Los Angeles. Engineer John Drake Mercereau masterminded this wonder. He cleverly curved the bridge 50 degrees. This solved the problem of unstable footing in the arroyo. The result is breathtaking. The graceful arches and curved deck are works of art. The bridge earned Historic Civil Engineering Landmark designation. It’s also on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction took 18 months. It was a massive undertaking. Horse carts hauled 11000 cubic yards of concrete and 600 tons of steel. The project cost a quarter of a million dollars. Thousands celebrated its opening.
Tragedy also struck the Colorado Street Bridge. It gained a sinister reputation as a “suicide bridge”. The first suicide occurred in 1919. Many more followed especially during the Great Depression. Estimates put the number of deaths at over 100.
The bridge fell into disrepair. Concrete chunks fell from its arches and railings. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake it closed. Federal state and local funds provided 27 million dollars for renovations. It reopened in 1993. Its original details were restored. A suicide prevention rail was added.
