Ever wonder how a Protestant architect ended up designing one of Montreal’s most iconic Catholic churches? That’s just one of the intriguing stories surrounding the Notre-Dame Basilica. It is a minor basilica in Old Montreal. It stands at 110 Notre-Dame Street West.

Let’s step back to the early 1800s. Montreal’s Catholic community had outgrown its original church. They needed a grander space. James O’Donnell was commissioned to design the new church. He was an Irish-American Anglican from New York City.

O’Donnell embraced the Gothic Revival style. His vision was influenced by Notre-Dame de Paris and the Church of Saint-Sulpice. This made the Notre-Dame Basilica the first Gothic Revival church in Canada. It became the largest place of worship in North America for a time.

Construction of the Notre-Dame Basilica took place from 1824 to 1829. The west tower was completed in 1841. It houses the famous bell Jean-Baptiste. The east tower followed in 1843. It houses a carillon of ten bells.

Interestingly, O’Donnell converted to Catholicism on his deathbed in 1830. He is the only person buried in the Basilica’s crypt. A commemorative plaque marks his final resting place.

Inside the Notre-Dame Basilica, prepare to be amazed by the deep blue vaults. Golden stars decorate them. The sanctuary is adorned in blues, reds, purples, silver and gold. Hundreds of intricate wooden carvings and religious statues fill the space.

Unusually, the stained-glass windows depict scenes from Montreal’s religious history. They do not show biblical scenes. A Casavant Frères pipe organ adds to the Basilica’s grandeur. It boasts four keyboards and 7000 individual pipes.

The Notre-Dame Basilica’s beauty led to the construction of a smaller chapel. It is named Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur. This chapel was meant for more intimate ceremonies. A fire damaged the chapel in 1978. It was rebuilt with a modern vault.

The Notre-Dame Basilica has hosted many significant events. These events include Celine Dion’s wedding and state funerals for prominent figures. Pope John Paul II even raised the church to a minor basilica in 1982.

Today, the Notre-Dame Basilica welcomes over a million visitors each year. Its religious, historical and artistic significance makes it a treasure. Its stunning interior and rich history leave a lasting impression. The Basilica began major restoration work in 2020. This is expected to be completed around 2040.

As you leave the Notre-Dame Basilica, remember the blend of styles and stories within its walls. It stands as a testament to Montreal’s rich heritage. It also shows the power of art and architecture to inspire.
