Beneath that dome resembling a birthday cake, lies a story of faith. This is the Cathedral Church of the Redemption. It stands as one of India’s most beautiful churches. It is also known as the Viceroy Church.
Located east of Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Cathedral Church of the Redemption is a red sandstone structure with a fine dome. It is part of the Delhi diocese of the Church of North India. The church’s story began in the early 1900s. There was a growing need for a place of worship for British officers.
Reverend T. R. Dixon took action. The Cathedral Church of the Redemption took eight years to build. It opened for public worship on January 18, 1931. Viceroy Irwin laid the foundation stone on February 23, 1927. Bishop Storrs Fox of Lahore consecrated the church on February 15, 1931. He was assisted by Reverend P. Dass, the Chaplain of Delhi.
Henry Medd designed the Cathedral Church of the Redemption. He ensured the interiors stayed cool during extreme summers. The church features beautifully curved high arches and delicate domes. Lord Irwin was impressed. He gifted an organ and a silver Cross to the church. The design pays homage to Palladio’s “II Redentore” in Venice. The name mirrors its Venetian inspiration. Medd also designed the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart in New Delhi.
The Cathedral Church of the Redemption is steeped in history. Its first service was on December 3, 1922. The earliest recorded wedding was on October 20, 1926. Adelbert Vere and Mina Monica were wed by Chaplain T.H. Dixon. Since January 18, 1936, the church has maintained clear records of its meetings. It also possesses a 1733 Cambridge Press Bible bound in red leather.
King George V donated a silver cross for the High Altar. The Dean and Chapter of York Minster gifted a marble High Altar and Pulpit. They also provided three Italian-carved effigies of Christ, St. Mary, and St. John. Lady Willingdon contributed to the teak pews engraved with the British Crown. She funded a matt coating on the ceiling for better acoustics. This improved the sound when the organ was played.
The Cathedral Church of the Redemption serves the community through education. It has evolved from an Englishman’s congregation to a multicultural one. It is a common home for all. The church blends with Sir Edwin Lutyens’ city plan. The Cathedral Church of the Redemption stands as a sanctuary. It offers quiet meditation and prayer. It is a vibrant parish.
