A century ago did trains truly thunder through this very spot? Welcome to the Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Famalicão. This unassuming station holds a rich history. It served as the terminus of the Porto to Póvoa and Famalicão line from 1881 to 1995. Imagine the bustle the arrival of a train once created. People rushing to board. Luggage piled high. The sounds of steam hissing and the rhythmic chugging of the engine.

This station wasn’t just a transportation hub. It was a vital link connecting the coastal region to the Minho’s interior. Before its construction the Minho region faced serious communication challenges. Poor roads made river transport the primary option. The government’s public works program changed things. A macadamized road built in 1856 allowed stagecoaches to travel between Porto and Viana do Castelo via Famalicão and Barcelos.

The dream of a railway line in the Minho region started even earlier. An English entrepreneur proposed a line between Porto and Valença in the 1840s. This idea was revived in 1857 when the Conde de Reus proposed a line between Porto and Vigo. His plan included a route through São Romão do Coronado. It would then continue to Vila do Conde and along the coast to Caminha. Famalicão’s importance led to adjustments. The final route included Famalicão and Barcelos. Construction began in 1872. The Campanhã to Nine section opened in 1875 including a branch line to Braga.

The extension to Famalicão itself was a significant undertaking. It involved creating new tracks and expanding the existing station. This extension was authorized in 1876. It was completed on June 12 1881. The narrow-gauge line was later upgraded to metric gauge in 1930. Despite its initial importance the line eventually closed in 1995. Increased road traffic and accidents led to its demise. Today a cycle path follows the former railway line a fitting tribute to its legacy. The Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Famalicão stands as a testament to the region’s history. It’s a reminder of a time when trains ruled and the journey was as much a part of the experience as the destination.
