Nishichiba Church

Have you heard of the Catholic heart of Chiba? Nishichiba Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, has been a spiritual haven since its establishment on August 15, 1954. Nishichiba Catholic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant community, with over 1,800 parishioners recorded at the end of 2019. The church offers a variety of services. These include English Mass every Sunday at 2 PM. Japanese services are held on Saturdays at 5:30 PM and Sundays at 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM. Interestingly, on the first Sunday of each month, the 9:30 AM Mass incorporates Vietnamese hymns and prayers. Spanish speakers can also find a home here, with Mass offered on the fourth Sunday at 5 PM. Nishichiba Catholic Church’s history intertwines with the broader story of Catholicism in Chiba. The roots of the church trace back to 1882, when the first chapel was established in Inohanadai. This chapel, dedicated to Our Lady, served as a sub-church of Tsukiji Church. Nishichiba Church’s journey has not been without its challenges. In 1945, the church faced a compulsory removal order. For a period, it became a “strolling church,” moving between the homes of its members. Finally, in 1947, the church found a temporary home in Gotsuma Chou. A kindergarten, St. Maryi, was even established within the church grounds. The present Nishichiba Church building, along with the kindergarten, was finally established in 1954. Nishichiba Catholic Church stands just an 8-minute walk from Nishi-chiba Station on the JR Soubu Line. It’s also accessible from Chiba Station (11-minute walk) and Nishi-nobuto Station on the Keisei Line (4-minute walk). Today, Nishichiba Catholic Church continues to welcome people from diverse backgrounds. It remains a beacon of faith in the heart of Chiba.
