How about stepping back millions of years? We are standing in front of the Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro. It holds secrets from Earth’s distant past.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro is part of the Museum System of the University of Palermo. It showcases Sicily’s geological history. The museum also features geological and paleontological collections from around the world. The exhibition spans three floors.

Gaetano Giorgio Gemmellaro founded the museum in 1860. He directed it until his death in 1904. Gemmellaro created the first university collection. It was originally housed in the Cabinet of Natural History. This was located in the house of the Teatini Fathers on Via Maqueda.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro suffered damage in the 1941 earthquake. Bombardments in 1943 further damaged the building. Some collections were also affected. The museum closed in 1965. In 1970 the Institute of Geology moved to its current location. The collection consists of about 600000 specimens.

The ground floor displays collections illustrating Sicily’s geological history. Exhibits range from the Permian period. This includes coral reef remains from the Sosio Valley. There are also Mesozoic era fossils including a rich collection of Ammonites. The Cenozoic era is represented by large shark teeth. Fossils from Monte Pellegrino represent the Quaternary period.

One highlight is the “Hall of Man”. It displays evidence of the first human presence in Sicily. The fossil remains of “Thea” are present here. She was a woman from the Upper Paleolithic period. Her skeleton was found in the San Teodoro cave.

Another interesting area is the “Hall of Crystals”. It contains crystals of calcite, aragonite, celestine, gypsum, halite and sulphur. Also of interest is the “Hall of Elephants”. It displays remains of dwarf elephants. These elephants populated Sicily during the Middle and Upper Pleistocene. A complete specimen of Elephas mnaidriensis is exhibited.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro also has a Dinosaur Room. A large Carnotaurus specimen is displayed. This carnivorous theropod lived 70 million years ago. An Anhanguera is also present. It is a flying reptile from the Lower Cretaceous period. A Tyrannosaurus Rex mandible is also on display.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro holds a gypsum crystal. This crystal contains a drop of Mediterranean water from 6 million years ago. This offers a unique glimpse into the past. It also holds the oldest human skeleton found in Sicily. It dates back to the Upper Paleolithic period.

In 2005, the “Hall of Elephants” opened. It showcases the dwarf elephant faunas of Pleistocene Sicily. In 2007, the museum expanded. It now occupies three floors of the building on Corso Tukory 131.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro is not just a display space. Scientists from around the world study its collections. The museum also participates in geological cultural events.

The Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro offers virtual installations. These include a volcano visit. There is also a reconstruction of Thea’s life. The shark hall features a Carcharodon Megalodon jaw.

So, as we stand here before the Museo di Geologia Gemmellaro, consider the deep history. Sicily’s story and the world’s story are all captured within these walls. It is a place to ignite curiosity. It is a place to discover our planet’s long and fascinating history.
