“Overjoyed and praising God” is how the Korean Catholic Apostolate of Staten Island felt upon finding their permanent home. For almost four decades, this vibrant community shuffled between parishes. They longed for a place to truly call their own.
The Archdiocese of New York recognized this need. They offered the once-closed St. John Baptist de la Salle Church in Stapleton to the Korean Catholic Apostolate. This marked a new chapter for the congregation.
Imagine the excitement as renovations began. The church received new paint, breathing fresh life into its walls. Hardwood flooring replaced worn surfaces. New stained glass cast colorful patterns and pews provided comfortable seating. Statues were carefully placed. Two small offices were constructed. These improvements allowed the Korean Catholic Apostolate to fully function. The total cost of the renovation was $1 million.
Before this permanent location, the Korean Catholic Apostolate faced challenges. Parishioners traveled far distances for mass. They went as far as Brooklyn or New Jersey. These trips were necessary to attend services celebrated in Korean.
Now, the Korean Catholic Apostolate has a dedicated leader. Rev. Hyunsang Sung oversees the church. Originally from South Korea, he moved to Staten Island. He was appointed by the Archdiocese of New York three years prior to the opening.
The Korean Catholic Apostolate of Staten Island became incorporated on September 29, 2011. This solidified their presence in New York. Their operating status is currently active.
The newly renovated church offers more than just a place to worship. It provides a community center. Here, members connect, celebrate, and support each other. This fosters a strong sense of belonging.
Today, the Korean Catholic Apostolate stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. After years of searching, this community has finally found its home. Its doors are open. All are welcome to experience the warmth and spirit of the Korean Catholic Apostolate of Staten Island.
