Here stands St Paul’s Church, a building that sparked controversy. The year was 1841. Ambrose Poynter designed this church.

St Paul’s history is filled with criticism and change. But it also stands as a testament to evolving tastes and community spirit. We will explore its unique story. We will discover its architectural quirks and the people who shaped it.

Originally, St Paul’s faced harsh words. The Cambridge Camden Society critiqued its design. They published their review in The Ecclesiologist. The society believed architects should embrace religious principles in their work. St Paul’s did not meet their standards initially.

The critics disliked many things. They hated the lack of a chancel. They disapproved of using brick instead of stone. The unornamented style reminded them of the 16th or 17th century. The clock tower was too huge. The octagonal turrets seemed disproportionate. Even the figures “1841” on the clock bothered them.

Despite the initial backlash, St Paul’s evolved. Over time, additions softened the stark design. In 1864, a chancel and vestry were added. H.G. Elborne may have designed them. Temple Moore added north and south transepts in 1893. These changes brought galleries.

The interior of St Paul’s also transformed. In 1996, it became a multi-use space. Freeland Rees-Roberts designed this new layout. Meeting rooms and a porch appeared between 2012 and 2013.

Look at the stained glass windows of St Paul’s. They add color and light to the space. The east window depicts the Conversion of St Paul. Alfred Wilkinson created it in 1960. Another window shows a scene after Holman Hunt. Heaton, Butler and Bayne created it.

Charles Perry served as the first vicar. He held the position from 1842 to 1847. Later, he became the first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne. Perry championed evangelical beliefs. He opposed ritualistic and rationalistic views.

Consider the former parsonage. George Gilbert Scott designed it. It now houses the Cambridge Muslim College.

St Paul’s continues to serve its community. Imogen Nay became the vicar in 2022. The church hosts various events including arts festivals. It is a welcoming space for all.

St Paul’s stands as a reminder. It shows that buildings can adapt and change. What began as a controversial design is now a cherished landmark. Its journey reflects shifts in architectural taste and the enduring power of community. The church is a Grade II Listed Building. It possesses visual interest. The interior retains spatial interest and notable fixtures. St Paul’s is a testament to the past and present.
