Saint John Fisher Church

Born in 1469, a son of a cloth merchant, John Fisher’s life story is intertwined with Saint John Fisher Church. His journey began in Yorkshire, but his impact resonated far beyond. At Cambridge University, young John Fisher’s thirst for knowledge propelled him to become a distinguished scholar, ordained a priest at 22. He later became the university’s chancellor, influencing education and shaping minds. In 1504, he became Bishop of Rochester. Saint John Fisher Church honors this man of faith and learning. He championed traditional Catholic doctrine during the tumultuous times of the Reformation, even tutoring the young Henry VIII. However, their paths diverged when Henry sought to divorce Catherine of Aragon. Bishop Fisher stood as Catherine’s staunch defender, incurring the king’s wrath. He openly challenged Henry’s claim as Supreme Head of the Church of England, a courageous stance that landed him in the Tower of London. Saint John Fisher Church stands as a testament to this unwavering faith. Despite the harsh conditions, Fisher remained steadfast. The Pope elevated him to Cardinal, a move that further enraged Henry. Fisher was tried for treason, condemned, and executed in 1535. His body, initially left on the scaffold, was later laid to rest beside his friend, Sir Thomas More.
