Established in 1960 the Language and Literature Bureau stands proudly. It’s a vital part of Brunei’s cultural landscape. This unassuming building has played a monumental role in shaping the nation’s identity.

The Language and Literature Bureau wasn’t always a Bureau. It began as the Lembaga Bahasa a Language Board. A motion in the Legislative Council on April 18 1960 paved the way. Its purpose was to solidify Malay’s position as Brunei’s official language. This was a bold move enshrined in the newly promulgated constitution.

The name changed in 1962. It became the Bahagian Bahasa dan Pustaka the Language and Literature Section. Initially under the Department of Education it gained independence in 1965. Finally it was named Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka the Language and Literature Bureau. Its importance grew.

In 1984 it found a permanent home under the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. This reflects its enduring contribution to Bruneian society. It’s more than a government department. It’s a guardian of language and literature.

The Bureau’s work is far-reaching. It’s responsible for the Kamus Bahasa Melayu Brunei. This is the official dictionary of Brunei Malay. First published in 1991 it’s now in its second edition boasting over 15000 entries. It’s a cornerstone of linguistic accuracy.

Beyond dictionaries the Language and Literature Bureau publishes journals and magazines. Bahasa Beriga Pangsura and Undang-Undang Syariah are among its esteemed journals. Bahana Juara Pelajar and Mekar are popular magazines. They showcase Bruneian creativity.

The Bureau’s influence extends to libraries across Brunei. It operates all public libraries. These libraries ensure accessibility to information and literature for all. From the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library in Bandar Seri Begawan to those in Sengkurong Muara and beyond these libraries are vital community hubs. Since 1970 mobile library services known as Perpustakaan Bergerak have further extended access.

The Language and Literature Bureau is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Brunei’s rich linguistic and literary heritage. A place where language is nurtured and literature flourishes. It shapes the future while preserving the past. It’s a cornerstone of Brunei’s cultural identity. Take a moment to appreciate its significant contributions.
