Back then, the Williamsburg Bridge was the longest suspension bridge. It spanned 7308 feet. That record stood until 1924. The Bear Mountain Bridge then claimed the title.
Construction was a massive undertaking. It began in 1896. The city spent $24.2 million to see it completed.
The Williamsburg Bridge played a vital role. It supported the city’s trolley system. Railways and trolley lines dominated early traffic.
Interestingly, the bridge was modified later. In 1932, the trolley tracks were removed. They made way for roadways to accommodate cars.

Gustav Lindenthal took over as chief engineer in 1902. He thought it was not beautiful. But he stressed its strength. It was supposedly twice as strong as the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Williamsburg Bridge opened on December 19, 1903. Horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and pedestrians used it first. Elevated trains joined them in 1908.
The bridge spurred massive growth in Brooklyn. Immigrants from various countries flocked to Williamsburg. This doubled the population in just ten years.
Over time, the Williamsburg Bridge faced challenges. Heavy traffic caused sagging. Subway cars and automobiles strained the structure.
Later, in 1911, engineers added supports. This reinforced the bridge for heavier loads. By the 1980s, corrosion threatened the entire structure. A 15-year reconstruction project began. It cost $1 billion.
