Before finding its home here the museum resided in the old Kronen Brewery from 1982 to 2000. The museum showcases Dortmund’s rise as Europe’s beer capital. The Thier Brewery was eventually absorbed by the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB). Production was moved. Today Thier Pils is still brewed by DAB. Unfortunately bottle production ceased in 2015.

The Brauerei-Museum Dortmund houses treasures. Original historical items such as a 1920s bar a 1922 Krupp truck and 1950s bottling machines. These exhibits capture the essence of Dortmund’s brewing past. The switch room from 1960 is a striking example. It is a testament to the technological evolution of the industry.

Post-war hardships including a British-imposed brewing ban forced innovation. Dortmund’s brewers created “Notbiere” from whey or potato starch. These brews nicknamed “Pippifax” were known for their diuretic effects.
