Bible Way Apostolic Church has deep roots. Its origins lie in the late 1930s with Mother Darthula Norwood Mother Fannie Norwood and Mother Gladys Smith. These women held house to house prayer meetings. They shared the message of salvation. Mr Newton “Newt” Knox provided land for a church building. Brother Robert Norwood Sr and others built a small wooden structure. This first meeting place was called Mt Sinai. Elder William Palmore served as the first pastor. Later the congregation joined the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith.
A larger building was constructed in 1946. Elder Isaiah W Bollinger became the pastor. The Prayer Band continued its community service. Members learned to pray for healing comfort and assistance. In 1962 Bishop Matthew Norwood was appointed pastor. Bishop Sylvester Norwood served as assistant pastor before starting a ministry in Georgia. Minister Nathaniel Moton also served the church.
Another expansion followed. Brother Robert Norwood served as the general contractor without pay. The church added a radio broadcast Vacation Bible School and Sunday School outreach. A new sanctuary with classrooms offices and a fellowship hall was dedicated in 1963. The church continued to grow. A vision emerged for a larger edifice an education facility a family life center and a senior care facility. This vision reflects the church’s commitment to serving the community and spreading its message. Bible Way Apostolic Church continues its important work in San Diego. The church welcomes visitors every Sunday for Sunday School at 9 am and worship at 10 am.
