The University Centre a vital part of McGill’s downtown campus. It houses everything from student services to a cafeteria and even a smoothie bar. Its history is fascinating. The Students’ Society of McGill University SSMU funded its construction along with McGill University itself. It opened to serve as a central gathering place. Students and faculty could come here for recreation relaxation and information.
Did you know that the SSMU acquired the building at 3501 Peel Street on March 14th 2018? Before that it served other purposes. This building houses numerous student clubs and organizations. A cafeteria provides sustenance. A student lounge offers comfortable couches for relaxation.
A little-known fact. In 1992 students tried to rename the University Centre the Shatner Building after the famous actor William Shatner. McGill refused. They only name buildings after deceased members or major benefactors. Shatner was neither.
