Let’s step back to 1897. Emil Rathenau the founder of AEG, established the Oberspree Cable Works here in Oberschöneweide. His vision was clear produce electrical cables and wires on a large scale. The location was perfect. It was on the banks of the Spree.
The Kabelwerk Oberspree quickly became a major player. By 1913, AEG expanded the factory along the Spree River’s bend. The expansion highlights the rapid growth and demand for electrical products. It became a sprawling industrial campus.
The buildings you see are constructed with yellow brick. They are characteristic of the area. This “Oberschöneweider Klinker” became synonymous with the Kabelwerk Oberspree. Today, the Kabelwerk Oberspree has been partially restored. It is now home to the Berlin University of Applied Sciences. The HTW uses these buildings as a campus. One of the large former factory buildings became an event venue.
