A 174 year old house stands before you. This is the Kamthieng House Museum. It’s a remarkable sight a traditional teakwood house from Chiang Mai. Now nestled in the heart of Bangkok it stands as a testament to Lanna heritage.

The Kamthieng House Museum is more than just a building. It’s a living museum. It tells the story of the Lanna people their culture and their way of life. The house was originally built in the mid-1800s by Mae Saed. She was the great-granddaughter of a Mueang Chae prince. The house was passed down through generations of a Lanna matrilineal clan.

In 1963 Kimhaw Nimmanhaeminda gifted the house to the Siam Society. Kimhaw was a direct descendant of Mae Saed. The house was named after her mother Kamthieng Anusarnsunthorn who was born within its walls. It’s a fascinating piece of history.

The journey from Chiang Mai to Bangkok was quite an undertaking. The house was carefully dismantled transported and then painstakingly reconstructed. This all happened within two years. King Bhumibol Adulyadej opened the Kamthieng House Museum in 1966. The museum showcases the beliefs and culture of the Lanna people. It’s a remarkable feat of preservation.

The architecture itself is stunning. The house features two rectangular structures with covered verandas. A walkway leads to a kitchen elevated on 36 octagonal teak pillars. The walls lean outward towards the lower edge of the V-shaped roof. Added later are an open veranda and two rice granaries. These additions came from Chiang Mai.

Inside you’ll find exhibits detailing daily life in a Lanna household. You’ll learn about their rituals ceremonies and traditions. You’ll see examples of their crafts tools and household goods. The museum gives you a real sense of what life was like in 19th century Lanna.

Legends say that the spirits of Mae Thao Khamdaeng Mae Saed and Mae Kamthieng still reside in the house. They appear occasionally in traditional Lanna attire. They protect both the house and its visitors. It adds a mystical element to this already captivating place.

The Kamthieng House Museum is a place where history comes alive. It’s a unique cultural treasure offering a glimpse into a rich and fascinating past. Take your time explore every detail and allow yourself to be transported to a different time and place. Don’t forget to look for the spirits they might be watching over you.
