Did you know that a small group of Hindu community members started the Hindu Temple Canton? They gathered in 1987 to celebrate Diwali. They felt a strong need for a temple on Detroit’s west side.

The Hindu Temple Canton’s story began with a simple desire. The community wanted a place to worship. An ad-hoc committee formed and finalized the temple site. Bhumi pooja was performed in the spring of 1987.

Phase 1 construction finished in 1988. It included the main temple, a kitchen, bathrooms and a hallway with a basement. The temple officially opened December 25 1990. Deities were installed then.

May 15 1993 was a special day. Murti Pratistha was performed during a three-day celebration. Shri Sat Guru Sant Keshavdasji blessed the event.

The Hindu Temple Canton needed more space. Additional land was bought for parking and halls. Bhumi puja was held on June 22 1997.

In 2004, the Hindu Temple Canton created a scholarship program. It supports Plymouth Canton High School graduates. By 2010, the temple had grown significantly. A new temple was built. It provided ample space and facilities.

The Hindu Temple Canton houses many deities. These include Lord Krishna and Radha Devi. Also, Lord Lakshmana, Lord Rama and Sita Devi. You will also find Lord Shiva and Parvathi Devi. And Goddess Sridevi, Lord Balaji and Goddess Bhoodevi. Lord Hanuman and Mother Durga are also represented.

Temple timings vary. Monday to Friday it is open 8 AM to 12 Noon and 5 PM to 9 PM. Saturday and Sunday it is open 9 AM to 9 PM.

Daily pooja activities enrich the temple’s atmosphere. On Sundays, there are Bhajans and sankeertan from 10 am to 12 noon. Monday evenings feature Shiva pooja and rudrabhishekam at 7 pm. Tuesdays include Hanuman chalisa and bhajan at 7 pm. Wednesdays offer Shrinath ji satsang at 7 pm. Thursdays have Sai sandhya and bhajans at 7 pm. Friday evenings include Lalitha sahasranama chanting at 7.15 pm. Saturdays feature Balaji abhishekam and shiva pooja.

Festivals are a vital part of the temple’s culture. Inspired by Shri Damodar Dutt Shastri, Hanuman Chalisa prayer started Tuesdays. Navaratri Garba is celebrated every year. So are Ram Navmi and Krishna Janmastami. Maha Shivratri, Hanuman Jayanti, Ganapati Choth and Diwali are also celebrated.

The Hindu Temple Canton offers more than just religious services. Language classes teach youth devotees. Medical doctors offer free health services and guidance. Free yoga classes are available for adults and kids every Sunday. Bhagavad Gita classes are also free every Sunday.
