Bethel Church of the Nazarene

Was it a vision or a miracle? The story of Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Quincy, Massachusetts, begins with a young man named William Taylor. In 1945, while still a student at Eastern Nazarene College, Taylor envisioned a church in the Germantown section of Quincy. This area, known as Bethel Beach, was transforming from a summer retreat to a year-round community. A dilapidated camp with a chapel stood on the land. It was no longer suitable for meetings. The Wollaston Church of the Nazarene purchased the property in 1947 for $2,750, fueled by Taylor’s vision. There was no provision for the New England District to own such property. The district advisory board requested the Wollaston Church hold the title temporarily. The Bethel Beach Church of the Nazarene officially began its work. Sunday services, Vacation Bible School, and Sunday school classes drew in locals and college students. The Vacation Bible School program was a particular success. The children of Germantown became strong supporters of Pastor Bill and the burgeoning Bethel Church of the Nazarene. Local newspapers even reported on the church’s impact, noting how children would enthusiastically invite their neighbors to services. The Bethel Church of the Nazarene continued its dedication to children. A day school operated within the church until 2001. With the church thriving, Taylor recognized the need for a parsonage. A kit house was purchased for $2,600 in 1949. The parsonage at 51 Empire Street was completed in 1950. Later, in 1956, the current parsonage at 33 Empire Street was built. The old parsonage was sold to a church member, Floyd Rugg. Bethel Church of the Nazarene, along with its parsonage, remains at this location today. From its humble beginnings, Bethel Church of the Nazarene has served both the Germantown community and Eastern Nazarene College. This dual vision continues to guide the congregation.
