“Can you feel the weight of history in these stones?” the guide asked, his voice hushed as they stood before the Capela do Bairro do Amial. The Capela do Bairro do Amial has a long and fascinating history. Although records indicate the chapel was established in 1758, it’s intrinsically linked to the arrival of the Franciscan Capuchin friars in the Amial neighborhood in the 20th century. The Capuchin friars, in their quest to establish a firm presence in Porto, initially set their sights on a different location but due to opposition, had to relinquish their plans. In 1940 they purchased the Quinta e Casa, a property on Rua Nova do Tronco. This property, situated near the Estrada da Circunvalação, was historically significant. It was known as the “Tronco” because it was here horses pulling carriages and stagecoaches on the old roads between Coimbra and Braga were tethered and shod. The Capuchins adapted the Quinta e Casa, initially using it as their seminary. However, the existing chapel proved too small for the growing congregation. Thus began the construction of the Capela do Bairro do Amial that you see today. The Capela do Bairro do Amial stands as a testament to the Capuchin friars’ dedication and the community’s enduring faith.
