The Old Lapau, a building steeped in history, stands before you, a testament to the enduring legacy of Brunei’s royal past. Once the main ceremonial hall for the Sultanate of Brunei, this modest structure resonates with the echoes of countless regal events. Built in 1950, it replaced the older Lapau Kajang, serving as the stage for significant milestones like the coronation of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III in 1951 and the promulgation of the Constitution of Brunei in 1959. The Old Lapau served as a versatile space, hosting state gatherings, legislative council meetings, and even royal receptions. Today, it is still considered a historic building, adorned with the original hardwood floor, the Sultan’s personal amplifiers, and the iconic U-shaped table where dignitaries once gathered. In 2018, the Old Lapau was transformed into a museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Bruneian Constitution. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself transported to a bygone era, where the stories of the Sultanate whisper from the walls.
