Frédéric Kuhlmann. A name whispered on the wind along Rue Kuhlmann in Lille. Who was this man, whose legacy is etched into the very streets we walk? Rue Kuhlmann isn’t just a street. It’s a story. A story of innovation, industry, and the sometimes pungent aroma of progress. Arriving in Lille at the tender age of 20, Frédéric Kuhlmann quickly made his mark. He taught applied chemistry. He established a significant chemical factory on the outskirts of Lille. This factory, producing sulfuric and nitric acid, was one of the first of its kind in France. While it contributed significantly to Lille’s industrial growth, it also earned a less favorable reputation for its air pollution. Imagine the residents of Wazemmes holding their noses as the factory billowed! Kuhlmann wasn’t just an industrialist. He was a benefactor to Lille’s intellectual and scientific community. He generously supported the Société des Sciences de Lille and the Société Industrielle de Lille, even serving as president. Rue Kuhlmann holds echoes of other stories too. At number 22, the Bassaget cap factory saw its workers strike in June 1936. At numbers 1 and 3, a metal workshop turned stove manufacturer eventually gave way to the modern “Les Jardins de Wazemmes” residence. Rue Kuhlmann stands as a testament to a man who shaped Lille’s industrial landscape.
